Another Czech string quartet will play in Libby Gardner Hall, thanks to the Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City.
Two weeks ago it was the Pavel Haas Quartet. On Monday, the Talich String Quartet will present a program that will include Felix Mendelssohn's Quartet in E flat major, Op. 12, and Dmitri Shostakovich's Quartet No. 2 in A major, Op. 68.
The Talich Quartet was established in 1964 by Jan Talich and named after his uncle, Vaclav Talich, the founder of the Czech Philharmonic. Jan Talich retired from the ensemble in 1993. His son, Jan Talich Jr., is now first violinist.
Over the years, the group has performed extensively throughout Eastern Europe. They first played in the West in 1975 when they were invited to come to Paris. The quartet made its United States debut the following year.
The foursome has also recorded a number of albums, including quartets by Dvorak and the complete Beethoven cycle.
