Here are some books that have crossed our desks recently.

HARDBACKS

Laurence Wyatt, one of Matt Royal's best friends, has been murdered by a professional hit man. Royal, a former lawyer, is determined to do whatever it takes to solve Wyatt's murder. "WATCHING GIDEON," by Stephen H. Foreman, Simon & Schuster, $14 (f)

Gideon Pickett was born without the ability to speak. This has never bothered his father, Jubal. He understands his son better than anybody, and though the boy has never uttered a word, the two could be no closer. Jubal would do anything for his boy. So, in 1953, he makes the decision to buy a red Ford Flathead V-8 truck and travel with Gideon from Mississippi to the desert canyon lands of Utah to strike it rich in uranium prospecting.

YOUNG READERS

"PAT THE BEASTIE: A Pull-and-Poke Book," by Henrik Drescher, Workman Publishing Co., $11.95 (ages 4-8)

Youngsters Paul and Judy have a pet they call Beastie. Unfortunately, Paul and Judy weren't very nice to Beastie. In fact — they were downright naughty. They've been reminded multiple times to be kind to their pets, but they never listen. Soon, they'll learn what happens when you cross a Beastie. This interactive book is a fun parody of "Pat the Bunny" and is full of bright colors, pop-ups, squishers and squeakers.
