WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach Angela Kristensen announced Wednesday that Rachel Gines from Bingham High School has signed to play basketball with the Red Storm beginning in the 2010-11 Season.
Gines, a 6-1 power forward, is regarded as one of the best frontcourt players in Utah. She is versatile on the low block going either way with her right or left hand and is a tremendous defensive player, not just on her own man but also in the team concept.
Kristensen is excited to have a pure post player headed to St. George.
"Signing Rachel early was a tremendous pick up for the Dixie State Women's basketball team," Kristensen said. "She had many opportunities to play at the Division-I level, so we feel very lucky that she chose Dixie State as the place to continue her career." Gines drew interest from multiple Division-I schools — Utah Valley, Idaho State, Portland State, Southern Utah and Pepperdine."
Last season, Gines was named to the Second Team All-Utah Region 3 and was an Honorable Mention All-State in the Deseret News. She also plays club basketball with the Utah Flight.
As two-sport athlete (volleyball) her long arms, jumping ability and strength make her a shot blocking threat.
"Rachel is a very athletic, agile post player who has so much natural ability. She has only reached the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her potential; it will be exciting to watch her develop and dominate at the Division II level" Kristensen said.
Gines is the first recruit for the 2010-11 season signed by the Dixie State College women's basketball team.
