Utah Utes football: Wynn better because of TCU defense

Jordan Wynn insists he's a better quarterback now than he was a week ago. The Utah freshman credits TCU's highly touted defense for the improvement.

"I've gained so much experience," Wynn said as the Utes prepare for their home finale Saturday against San Diego State.

Wynn completed 16-of-32 passes for 219 yards and a touchdown at Fort Worth. He was sacked twice and intercepted once in the 55-28 setback to the fourth-ranked Horned Frogs.

"I think it'll be a big positive for Jordan Wynn. I thought he handled himself very well," said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. "Even though his numbers weren't spectacular, he hung in there. He was getting hit quite often. He showed a great deal of resiliency. I thought he was poised and confident in the pocket."

Wynn, he added, will be a better quarterback in the future because of it.

Offensive coordinator Dave Schramm seconds that motion. He said Wynn is getting better each and every day.

"It's an experience-laden position. You just can't grab someone off the bus stop, throw them into a stadium like that and expect them to do great," Schramm explained. "Other than the one mistake (an interception) he made, he had a heckuva night. He never wavered. He was great on the sideline, focused."

Schramm noted that Wynn's eyes never dropped when he was getting the pass rush and that he's working his tail off to fix deficiencies.

"He's an incredible young man," Schramm said. "I'll tell you what."

Wynn, a 19-year-old with just two games of collegiate experience, is determined to learn from his mistakes and eliminate them.

"I'm just going to go out and play my game. Obviously I gained a lot of experience from that," he said of the TCU game. "I probably won't face another defense like that until we play them again next year. So things will probably really start slowing down now."

The Horned Frogs' speed, though, didn't discourage Wynn. He kept pace by quarterbacking an offense that put up more points on TCU than any other opponent this season.

"My confidence never really swayed. On Saturday, I thought we could come back the whole time," Wynn said. "I was getting back up and trying to make plays. In the end, it wasn't enough."

As such, he's eager to get back out on the field.
