Winter for some is a time of absolute boredom, stuck indoors with no real reason to venture outside in the cold.

For others, it's a great chance to experience opportunities that come around only in the winter.

So what is there to do in the winter?

Here are 10 suggestions:

Snowboarding

This sport goes hand-in-hand with skiing. Newer in origin, it rapidly caught on, especially with the younger generation.

Consensus is that snowboarding has a much faster learning curve than does skiing.

Snowboard instruction has evolved in recent years, in part, because instructors are much more experienced and know what works.

The simple fact, too, is that by taking a lesson, the road to reaching a comfort level on the slopes is straighter and more rapid.

Snowboard equipment has also tried to keep pace with the rapid developments. This includes better boots, step-in bindings and boards that offer more control.

Eleven of Utah's resorts offer snowboard lessons. Only Alta and Deer Valley are closed to boarders.

Equipment can either be purchased new, picked up at a swap or rented.
