Police say teen attempted to rob drug dealer
ROY — An Ogden teen has been arrested after police say he tried to rob a drug dealer at gunpoint.
Derek Frank Navarro, 17, told investigators he arranged to meet his alleged victim on Saturday to buy ecstasy, said Roy Police Sgt. Shawn O'Malley. At some point during the transaction, though, Navarro decided to take the man's drugs and money, O'Malley said.
"The victim apparently had no money," the sergeant said. "(Navarro) got out of the vehicle and fired one shot into the passenger side of the vehicle and then a second shot into the vehicle as the vehicle was driving away."
The alleged victim was able to escape and is still being sought for questioning. Witnesses to the incident called police with a description of Navarro and the vehicle he was driving.
Officers located Navarro's car in Riverdale a short time later and took him into custody following a brief chase. Two other juveniles were found in the car with Navarro. They were released to their parents, O'Malley said.
Police located the .22-caliber pistol they believe Navarro used in the alleged robbery, despite his attempt to discard the gun, the sergeant said.
Navarro was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of aggravated robbery, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, obstructing justice and avoiding apprehension.
