Educators convicted of sexual misbehavior
Keith Lorraine Gillins of Fillmore, a former Millard County High School teacher, was sentenced to prison this year for engaging in sex with a 17-year-old female student.
Christopher Burton of Tooele was sentenced in 2007 to up to 30 years behind bars for molesting eight third-grade boys in his darkened classroom while other pupils watched a video.
Linda Nef, a former Bountiful Junior High School teacher, received a prison term of three years to life this year for engaging in sex with a former male student of hers who was 13 at the time.
Arielle Beck of Moab, a former teaching assistant and assistant softball coach, was sentenced to probation this year on one count of second-degree felony forcible sodomy with a 14-year-old girl. The girl committed suicide two years after Beck's trial. Beck had already served three years in prison, had her original conviction overturned and was facing a new trial in October. She entered an "Alford plea," which is not an admission of guilt but an acknowledgment that prosecutors have enough evidence to get a conviction at trial.
Frank Laine Hall, an award-winning first-grade teacher at Rosamond Elementary, received a lengthy prison term in 2007 for molesting children in his Riverton classroom. At one point during his sentencing, Hall put his head down on the podium and wept loudly as the judge read each of the many counts against him.
Melinda Dee Deluca, a former teacher at Copper Hills High School, went to jail for 90 days in 2007 for engaging in sex with a 16-year-old male student. The boy's mother told the judge that her son is deeply depressed, has been both taunted and shunned by former friends, no longer plays the sports he once loved, and is enrolled in home study so he does not have to attend school.
