Utah Utes football: Frogs shut down MWC's top rusher
FORT WORTH, Texas — Eddie Wide's school-record six consecutive 100-yard rushing games came to a crashing halt against TCU's stout defense Saturday night.
Wide, who came into the game as the Mountain West Conference leading rusher for league games at 122.6 yards per game, was held to a mere 25 yards on 14 carries by the Horned Frogs. In fact, the entire Ute rushing game only managed 65 yards.
"They did a great job with the zone play and just sealed everything off," Wide said. "The offensive line did a great job of blocking, but I couldn't find an open hole."
As far as having his record of 100-yard games snapped at six, Wide wasn't too concerned.
"I really wasn't worried about that," he said. "I was just worried about helping the team out in any way possible."
Shaky Smithson, who had missed three games with a high ankle sprain before returning last week, was Utah's most effective rusher. He picked up 23 yards on five carries on direct snaps, including a 10-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 10-yard TD in the fourth.
