BYU soccer: Top-ranked Stanford ends Y's season
PALO ALTO, Calif. — BYU's women's soccer team played a close back-and-forth battle in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, but fell to top-seed Stanford 2-0, Saturday.
"It was an honor to be here and play Stanford," said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "I'm very proud of how hard our team played and the level at which we competed."
The Cougars end their season with an impressive 18-4-2 record with three wins over top-25 teams, an MWC Regular Season title, and a fifth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.
For a team that averages 24.7 shots per game, the Cougars held the Cardinal to just 22 shots in the game while BYU finished with 15. For just the third time this season, Stanford gave up double-figure shots.
The Cougars saw shots from Carlee Payne, Lauren Anderson, Stacy Bartholomew, Kassidy C. Shumway, Jessica Ringwood, Alyssa Vander Veur, Jennie Marshall and Kristi Dow-Jackson with Payne leading with four.
Stanford's two goals came in the first 20 seconds of the contest and in the last minute of play in regulation.
The Cougars won eight of their last ten games on the year.
