HERRIMAN — An accidental fire ignited a bug bomb at a Herriman home Saturday.

Smoke was reported at the home, which received about $25,000 damage, about 4:30 p.m.

Investigators later determined that the homeowner, who was prepping the one-story home at 13310 S. Redwood Road for rent, had been using a torch to repair some water lines in the basement, said Unified Fire Authority spokesman Capt. Clint Smith.

Afterward, the hot torch appears to have caught some carpet padding on fire.

That small fire ignited the highly flammable propellant used to disperse the pesticide in the home.

Fire damage was found in the basement, through a chimney space and into the attic, Smith said.

Firefighters made an offensive attack against the fire, Smith said, and the floor structure appeared to be weakened.
