Similar to the American Memorial Day, the German National Day of Mourning, or Volkstrauertag, will be held Sunday.

The German Air Force Liaison Office at Hill Air Force Base will observe Volkstrauertag during a ceremony at Fort Douglas Military Cemetery at 10 a.m.. All victims of war and oppression will be commemorated.

The tradition began in 1919, just after World War I, when the German people mourned more than 5 million deaths, according to a Liaison Office news release.

The German choir Harmonie will perform during the service, which is expected to be attended by German-Americans and representatives of the armed services.
