Driver dies after string of crashes on I-15
SANDY — A reckless driver who caused three crashes Friday and slowed traffic on southbound I-15 to a near standstill died in the third collision he was involved in, officials said.
Troopers were continuing to investigate Friday night what caused Sheldon Taylor, 54, of Sandy, to drive so dangerously, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Blaine Robbins, though they were "leaning toward medical problems, but we still have to draw blood and rule out other possibilities."
"We just don't know as far as if there was any impairment or what was going on there," Robbins said.
Troopers first began receiving reports about 1 p.m. of a vehicle that was driving recklessly on I-15 near 1300 South. The vehicle then hit two other cars near 5500 South in a collision that Robbins called "pretty significant." Soon after, another crash was reported near 7800 South, followed by the fatal crash at 8500 South.
"There, he had a collision with a white vehicle and both cars as they were sliding made contact before spinning out of control," Robbins said. "They hit the cement barrier and were pushed back into the lane."
Robbins said the "suspect vehicle" landed on its top. The driver was taken to Intermountain Medical Center and pronounced dead. Overall, six vehicles were involved in the collisions, but Robbins said only one person had to be transported to the hospital. All others involved sustained minor injuries.
Robbins said there have been indications that the same driver also caused other, smaller crashes. None, however, had been officially reported.
