4A high school football: Brown plays big in Timpview win
As the 2009 season began, Timpview quarterback Trevor Brown was hopeful just to get in on a handful of plays.
Thursday night, the senior racked up nearly 300 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as the indisputable offensive leader of a team that will play for its fourth consecutive state championship next week.
With 187 yards on the ground, Brown's ability to run became the indefensible wild card against a Mountain Crest squad that was able to hold the rest of the Timpview offense largely in check.
"Trevor's 6-6 and runs a 4.6; once he gets going, he's tough to bring down," Timpview coach Louis Wong said. "He can play defensive end, quarterback, offensive line, you name it. He's what you want in your quarterback."
For the Mustangs, finding and tackling the quarterback became a nightmare, particularly late in the game when his running helped squelch a potential rally.
Unlike most quarterbacks, who are content to slide and avoid any semblance of contact, Brown was shedding would-be tacklers on nearly every run.
Brown completed nine of 15 passes for 100 yards and an interception. He wisely credited his offensive line, which performed well despite losing left tackle Tyson Tiatia to an apparent knee injury just before halftime.
"The whole second half we had a junior in at center because our regular center moved to left tackle," Brown said. "Braxton Wright really played great at center, and our line really stepped it up tonight."
Outside of Brown, the Thunderbirds were held to just 174 yards, 55 coming from running back Bryson McKenzie on the opening play of the game.
Timpview added another 63 yards thanks to a pass from receiver Jeremiah Burr to Zack VanLeeuwen on their second drive.
Brown picked up yards in big chunks, including six gains of over 10 yards. With Mountain Crest surging to within 10 early in the fourth quarter, it was his 33-yard dash on third-and-15 that all but put the game away.
It was with Burr that Brown first shared quarterback duties, but the two have settled into their current positions with a large measure of success. The two tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns with 11 and combined for 980 yards on the ground during the regular season.
"I have to give Jeremiah a ton of credit because we've pushed each other," Brown said. "At Timpview, we believe competition breeds champions, and that's proven to be successful to this point."
