BYU football: Hall closing in on victory milestone

PROVO — With a win at New Mexico Saturday, BYU quarterback Max Hall would tie an impressive milestone.

Hall has won 28 games as the Cougar starter, one win behind the all-time leader, Ty Detmer, who racked up 29 victories in his career.

"I'm very fortunate to be the coach when Max has been here as the quarterback," said coach Bronco Mendenhall. "He's a very good player, he's a great leader and he's helped us win a lot of football games. In fact, I think BYU hadn't won 10 games three straight years for 24 years. It's not easy to do. He's been the quarterback that's helped us do it — and maybe a fourth if we're able to continue to play well. I think that speaks a lot to how he's played for us."

Hall completed 20 of 22 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns in last week's 52-0 pummeling of Wyoming.

New Mexico coach Mike Locksley has been impressed by what he's seen from Hall this season. The Lobos are looking for ways to prevent Hall from turning in another big performance.

"If you look at BYU from an offensive standpoint, you have to try to find a way to disrupt the timing," Locksley said. "If you allow him to sit back there he'll pick you apart because he's such an accurate thrower and has such a great grasp of that system they have on offense. We've got to find a way to disrupt the timing, whether it be through pressure or disguising of coverages to take the rhythm away from them on the offensive side of the ball."
