SANDY — A building occupied by a women's clothing company caught fire Thursday, suffering heavy smoke and water damage.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at Layers Clothing, 9150 S. 500 West, shortly after 1 a.m. when a motorist on I-15 spotted flames and called 911, said Sandy Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Cline.

Cline said when firefighters arrived they found smoke and flames coming from the roof. Crews from the Sandy, Midvale, West Jordan and South Jordan fire departments quickly knocked down the fire.

No one was injured in the blaze. Damage is estimated at $50,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
