Salt Lake City maintained its third-place ranking but three other Utah metro areas fell in the Milken Institute's Best Performing Cities Index for 2009.

The index ranks U.S. metro areas by how well they are creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth. The components include job, wage and salary and technology growth.

Salt Lake was third in the list of 200 largest metro areas. Provo-Orem slipped from first in 2008 to 28th this year.

Ogden-Clearfield fell from 18th last year to 32nd this year.

Topping the list among largest metro areas was Austin-Round Rock, Texas, followed by Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood, Texas.

Among the 124 smallest metro areas, St. George fell from fourth last year to 30th this year.
