Alpine School District's Central Elementary School in Pleasant Grove was awarded Wednesday the National Parent Teacher Association's "Reflections Enhancement Award."

Central Elementary will receive a $775 grant to be used on student-centered programs focused on arts education. The school has 500 children -- many of whom are considered "at-risk." Central is a Title 1 school which means it has a large percentage of students on free or reduced lunch.

Central Principal Mary Lou Anderson wrote in the application letter: "Our Arts Program, which covers instructional materials, art supplies, drama club, school play, a Gettysburg re-enactment and a dance festival, has been a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn and explore all aspects of the arts."

"We are committed to spend $775 toward our arts programs as we match the funds donated by this grant to make a difference in the lives of our students," Anderson wrote.
