BYU basketball: Collinsworth signs with BYU hoops
The Utah Utes basketball team added four high school prospects while the Cougars locked up a local star on Wednesday — the earliest day basketball players and gymnasts could commit.
Signees for women's basketball, volleyball and baseball will be released later this week.
BYU basketball
Provo High basketball star Kyle Collinsworth made it official Wednesday morning by signing a letter of intent to play hoops for BYU.
The 6-foot-6 guard/forward will join his brother Chris, who played for BYU in 2007-08 and is now serving an LDS Church mission, on the Cougars next season. After next season, the younger Collinsworth is planning to depart on an LDS Church mission himself. With the two Collinsworths and freshman Brandon Davies, BYU now has three former Provo High Bulldogs in its program.
"We are excited with the addition of Kyle Collinsworth to our program," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "He was a national recruit who is a terrific competitor and an extremely versatile player. An athlete with the skill level to play multiple positions, Kyle is a talented scorer, a productive rebounder and a proficient distributor.
The Provo High senior, with a career average of nearly 17 points per game, helped the Bulldogs to state titles in 2007 and 2008 and a second-place finish in 2009. Last season he averaged almost 19 points per game and was named the Deseret News 4A MVP. He's the leading candidate for this season's Mr. Basketball award.
The Cougars' other recruit, 6-foot-3 shooting guard Anson Winder of Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas, is planning to sign his letter of intent on Thursday during his school's early-signing ceremony. The Cougars have one more scholarship they can fill for next season, but they likely won't decide who to offer that to until after the season.
Utah basketball
Utah head basketball coach Jim Boylen has announced the signing of four high school prospects that will join the Runnin' Utes in 2010.
Three players, guard Preston Guiot of Bolivar, Mo.; guard Dominique Lee of Oakland, Calif.; and guard J.J. Henry of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., committed to the Utes in recent months and will be scholarship players. Neal Monson, a 6-10 center from Waterford High School, has signed a statement of commitment.
"I am really excited about this class," said Boylen. "We have brought in another versatile class that fills multiple positions. This group adds even more depth, toughness and athleticism as we continue to build this program. These guys have a passion to play for Utah."
