LDS Film Festival deadline extended

The deadline to postmark entries for the LDS Film Festival's seven-page script competition has been extended until Nov. 16, which is also when entries for the short-film competition must be postmarked, according to a news release. In the seven-page script competition, three of the screenplays will be produced and planned to be premiered at the January festival. The three scripts will win the first-place prize of $200.

The short-film competition includes films that are 20 minutes or shorter and has a first-place prize award of $1,000.

For information and entry guidelines, go to www.ldsfilmfestival.org

At least a dozen films screened at the film festival last year have been either released in theaters or on DVD, including "One Good Man," "The Adventures of Food Boy," "Dragon Hunter," "Once Upon a Summer" and "Scout Camp."

BYU Studies essay, poetry contest

The deadline for the BYU Studies annual personal essay and poetry contests is Dec. 31. Contests are open to Brigham Young University graduate students, BYU graduates and BYU Studies subscribers. Contest winners may be invited to present their essays or poetry at a two-day BYU Studies symposium in March 2010 that will bring to a close the 50th anniversary celebration.

Cash prizes will be awarded for winning entries, which may also be published in the BYU Studies journal. Personal essays must not exceed 3,000 words. Poems should generally not exceed 35 lines. Up to three essays and three poems may be entered per person. Contest details and submission instructions are online at byustudies.byu.edu. Click on "Submissions" and then "Poetry Contest" or "Essay Contest."
