PROVO — A Utah County man was killed in a head-on crash on state Route 68 Wednesday on the west side of Utah Lake.

The driver, Omar Ramirez Avila, 29, was driving north in a Nissan Sentra when he tried to pass a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer around 10:30 a.m., Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cameron Roden said.

His car collided head-on with a Pontiac sedan, Roden said. Avila was pronounced dead at the scene.

His 52-year old mother was airlifted to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where she remained in serious condition late Wednesday night, Roden said. A man and woman from the Pontiac were taken by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries.

Troopers said all occupants were wearing seat belts.

The accident occurred near Pelican Point about 18 miles north of Elberta and 12 miles south of Saratoga Springs.
