RIVERDALE — A pregnant woman from California died in a rollover crash involving a semitrailer, which closed the on-ramp to eastbound I-84 from southbound I-15 in Weber County on Tuesday.
The driver of a truck hauling apples failed to negotiate the curve on the ramp and the vehicle flipped onto its passenger side and onto cement barriers about 3 p.m., said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cameron Roden.
The man was uninjured, Roden said, but his wife, 28-year-old Martha Pichardo from Patterson, Calif., was ejected from the sleeper area of the semi and crushed by the truck and barriers.
Pichardo was pronounced dead at the scene and later transported to Ogden Regional Medical Center for the Medical Examiner's review, UHP reported in a news release.
The driver was taken to Ogden Regional for evaluation, but troopers said he appeared to have very minor injuries.
Troopers said they believe the driver was travelling too fast for conditions.
The on-ramp remained closed as of 9 p.m.
Troopers are still investigating the accident, and no citations have been issued.
