Lee Benson's column (Nov. 9) about Herb Schroeter and his military service to Germany reminded me that young people of all nations are the ones asked to fight the battles old men plan.

As a young soldier in the Royal Artillery serving in Germany in 1958, I had gone harboring negative thoughts about Germany, whose airmen had destroyed our home in London during the blitz in 1941. Instead, as a Latter-day Saint myself, I grew to love the people of Germany, attending church and befriending many of them.

Herb Schroeter paid a terrible price as a POW but has seen his life enriched so much more living in this great country of ours.

I salute all our veterans who served with honor.
