South Jordan man killed in Oregon crash
PENDLETON, Ore. — A Utah man died in a crash when the vehicle went out of control on black ice and went down a small ravine in northeastern Oregon early Sunday.
Clarence Campbell, 83, from South Jordan, was in a vehicle heading east on I-84 just east of Pendleton with three adults and one child when the vehicle hit a patch of black ice and began to slide, according to an Oregon State Police press release. The driver, a man from Riverton, attempted to correct the vehicle but it slid off the road, struck a guardrail and slid down a ravine about 2:30 a.m.
Family members performed CPR on the man until OSP troopers arrived and resumed CPR efforts, but the man was pronounced dead by medical personnel about 30 minutes later, police said.
The four remaining people in the vehicle, which include Campbell's wife, another woman from South Jordan, the driver, and a 3-year-old boy from Riverton, were transported to St. Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton for treatment of minor injuries, according to the press release.
Police said Campbell, the driver and the child were all wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
OSP troopers from Milton-Freewater, Pendleton and La Grande offices responded to the scene. The investigation indicates speed was not a factor, according to the press release.
The crash was one of many due to icy road conditions that morning. The freeway was closed for about two hours following the accident.
