Utah Utes football: Shakerin hits century mark, scores two TDs
Lost amid the hoopla over Jordan Wynn's successful debut as a starter and Eddie Wide's record sixth consecutive 100-yard rushing game was the play of running back Sausan Shakerin.
The freshman from Alta, who had rushed for 49 yards all season on just seven carries, saw his first extensive action of the year and finished with 100 yards, hitting the century mark on the nose with an 8-yard run around the left end for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Besides his 100 yards on 16 carries, Shakerin also caught three passes for 34 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
"It felt amazing," Shakerin said of his big game. "Our line did an incredible job. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have had two touchdowns."
Shakerin had run just once in the first five games, a 46-yard yard rush against San Jose State that ended with an injured wrist and shoulder that kept him out for three weeks. However, he said he's 100 percent now and the Utes are happy to have him to supplement Wide in the backfield.
"We're very high on Shak," said coach Kyle Whittingham. "He's just a freshman and he's a big kid who's going to get a lot bigger."
