WOMEN'S SOCCER: Utah Valley soccer players earned Great West All-Conference honors, including Brooke Salcido, who was voted the West Division Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach Brent Anderson, who was named the West Coach of the Year.
All of the winners were honored by Great West Commissioner Ed Grom at a banquet at NJIT on the Thursday night prior to the start of the GWC soccer tournament today at Naperville, Ill. The Wolverines open the tournament today at noon MT against Delaware State.
Salcido was also one of three first-team defenders and was joined on the team by forwards Nicole Archibald and Jaime Lyons, midfielder Athena Maher, goalkeeper Tasha Bell and midfielder Lauren Bluth, who was the West's at-large selection.
Houston Baptist's Isla Cameron earned the West Offensive Player of the Year while her teammate, Arielle Rodriguez, was named Newcomer of the Year.
WRESTLING: The Wolverines showcased their talents Thursday night at the annual Green & Black Intrasquad Dual in Orem. In the end, Coach KC Rock's Green team came from behind to win 30-27 over Coach Erkin Tadzhimetov's Black team.
"Tonight was a great opportunity to see what our guys can in a match situation," UVU head wrestling coach Greg Williams said. "It was helpful to see where all of our newcomers are at and what we need to help them develop. They are all coming along nicely. I am really proud of the work ethic and attitude that we have, and I am excited to see what we can do."
With a starting roster spot on the line at 133 pounds and the team score tied at up at 27 points apiece, the feature bout of the night was a good one between senior Jeffrey Newby and junior Flint Ray. Newby took the early advantage scoring a takedown midway through the first period. Ray countered back with an escape of his own, but at the end of the first Newby was up 2-1.
