WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Red Storm secured at least a share of the Pacific West Conference Championship with a 3-0 victory over the Academy of Art University at Hansen Stadium on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Red Storm is eligible for the NCAA Division-II Tournament with an automatic qualifier given to the Pac West Conference champion.

Dixie State (13-4, 12-1) won their final match at Hansen Stadium, celebrating the collegiate soccer careers of four graduating seniors — Mikala Wilkes, Carly Haycock, Robyn Wall and Shannon Larsen. Academy of Art (3-14-2, 3-8-2) had a two-match win streak snapped being held to only one shot on goal.

Camille Peterson lit up the scoreboard with the game winner in the 49th minute converting on an open-net opportunity from the left side.

Haycock scored twice — in the 73rd minute, beating AAU goalie Melissa Co to the left corner, and again in the 89th minute off a Wilkes assist to push the final score to 3-0.

Dixie State goalies Abby Monroe and Tonya Smith split halves in goal. Smith got credit for the win making one save late in the second half.

The match was scoreless after the first 45 minutes although the Red Storm outshot the Urban Knights 14-0.

MEN'S SOCCER: Streaks were snapped in a very positive way Thursday night at Hansen Stadium for the Dixie State men's soccer team. By defeating the visitors from Academy of Art University 4-0 at St. George, DSC snapped a four-match losing streak and a lengthy scoreless drought.

The Red Storm (6-10-1, 4-9) shut out a conference opponent for the first time since Oct. 8, a 4-0 win over Chaminade. AAU was held to just four shots in the rematch with Dixie State — the Urban Knights beat DSC 3-0 on Sept. 28.

Starting in the 36th minute, Dixie State scored two goals in a minute and 22 seconds. Josh Hernandez scored a breakaway goal (35:36) on a center pass from Kevin Young. Hernandez's goal broke a Dixie State scoreless string of 404 minutes dating back to the beginning of a match against Hawaii Pacific on October 22.

Brent Knoblauch found the net from 20 yards out at 36:48 to give the Storm a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Francisco Arellano pushed the DSC lead to three goals going top shelf on the left side after a 25-yard cross from Hernandez in the 64th minute.

Tyler McAninch made one save to earn the victory in goal.

Dixie State will wrap up the 2009 regular season on Saturday night against Notre Dame de Namur University at 5:30 p.m. The match will be held at Dixie High School.
