Utah Utes, BYU volleyball: Both fall in road matches
ALBUQUERQUE — Karolina Bartkowiak and Cinthia Silva both recorded at least 10 kills but the University of Utah volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to New Mexico (25-23, 13-25, 25-27, 19-25) Thursday in a Mountain West Conference match.
Utah (15-8, 8-3 MWC) has won nine of its last 12 matches but was outhit .189 to .107 in the match.
Bartkowiak hit 17 kills, her third straight double-figure-kill match and 16th this season. She now has 30 such performances in her career and also added seven digs and three blocks.
Silva came up with 12 kills and now has hit double-digits in kills in two straight matches and 20 times in her two-year career. Silva has had at least 10 kills in 11 of Utah's 23 matches this season. She also chipped in six digs and two blocks.
TCU 3, BYU 0: At Fort Worth, Texas, the Cougars (12-10, 6-4 MWC) fell to TCU (21-5, 10-2 MWC) for the second time this season (25-12, 25-18, 25-18). Senior rightside hitter Kayla Walker led BYU in kills with eight, also tallying eight digs. Camilla Phillips chalked up seven kills hitting at .333 while Christina Measom tallied five blocks. Libero Melissa Lake Wright tallied a season-high 20 digs, also tying her career-high.
UVU 3, HOUSTON BAPTIST 1: At Houston, Utah Valley's Kayli Broadbent recorded a team-high 15 kills and seven digs, and Chelsey Garfield added nine kills and 11 digs in leading the Wolverines to a 25-16, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20 Great West Conference victory. With the victory, the Wolverines (18-9) improve to 8-2 in GWC play — one game behind league-leading North Dakota — with two conference matches remaining. The Wolverines travel for a meeting with Texas-Pan American tonight and then host NJIT on Nov. 12 in their final regular season home match of the season.
S. UTAH 3, ORAL ROBERTS 0: The Thunderbirds used a balanced attack and took advantage of 23 ORU errors to post a 25-18, 25-18, 25-19 sweep — their first of the season.
