Utahns received $23.7 million in cash through "Cash for Clunkers," according to federal government data on the program.

Nationwide, Americans received $2.9 billion to trade in older cars for newer, more fuel-efficient ones. The "Cash for Clunkers" program, officially called the Car Allowance Rebate System, allowed people to turn in older cars and receive up to $4,000 in a government rebate toward the purchase of a new car.

Utah's nearly $24 million in rebates puts the state toward the bottom of the list of U.S. states and territories. California was No. 1 with $322.7 million. The District of Columbia came last with $67,500 in rebates.

Nearly 700,000 more fuel-efficient vehicles were sold in fewer than 30 days.
