Tax strategy exposed

Now we know the way to convince Utahns that a tax increase is a good idea.

We can get former Republican Senate President Lane Beattie to tell us that boosting a wide range of taxes is a good idea.

We can get former Republican Gov. Norm Bangerter to tell us that restoring the sales tax on food is a place to look.

We can get the Republican Legislature to talk about increasing the cigarette and other so-called targeted taxes by $100 million.

Then we can get other local leaders to suggest we not underestimate the public's willingness to accept tax increases.

Thanks for the article (Oct. 30) that gave us an inside look at the Legislature's scheme for softening the taxpayers into accepting higher taxes.
