Officers ID man shot by deputies
PROVO — A man shot and killed by Utah County sheriff's deputies who say he pointed a gun at them Tuesday has been identified.
Todd Hainsworth, 50, a Utah County resident, died after leading officers on a mile-and-a-half chase at the south end of Utah Lake.
Hainsworth called 911 Tuesday morning and said he had taken pills and was suicidal, according to Sheriff's Lt. Darren Gilbert. A dispatcher heard gunshots and labored breathing during the call. Officers used the cell phone signal and an airplane to spot his pickup truck about three miles southwest of the Lincoln Beach boat harbor.
Gilbert said Hainsworth rammed one deputy's vehicle and then pulled a gun on officers at the end of the pursuit, leading to the shooting.
The officers, who were not injured, were placed on paid administrative leave per standard policy.
Hainsworth was estranged from his wife, Gilbert said, but investigators have not said what may have sparked the incident.
A team led by the Utah County Attorney's Office is investigating the shooting.
