TOOELE — A Tooele man was flown to a Salt Lake hospital in serious condition Wednesday after a head-on collision.

A 44-year-old woman was driving north on state Route 36 when her car veered across the median into the southbound lane at about 2200 North and crashed head-on into the man's vehicle, said Lt. Paul Wimmer of Tooele police.

When police arrived on the scene, they extricated the driver of the southbound vehicle, a 54-year-old man from Tooele. He was flown to Salt Lake City by air ambulance. The female driver was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, police said.

Southbound traffic was backed up to the next town, Erda, at least a half-mile from the crash.

The speed limit on S.R. 36 is 65 miles per hour. Police said they didn't believe either driver had been speeding but aren't sure what caused the accident.

The crash is still under investigation.
