One of Gov. Gary Herbert's top advisers from his days as lieutenant governor has been named to the State Tax Commission.

Michael Cragun, who served as deputy chief of staff to then-Lt. Gov. Herbert, will replace Pam Hendrickson on the four-member commission. Hendrickson, the commission chairwoman, is retiring.

Cragun's appointment must be confirmed by the state Senate, which meets again mid-month. Herbert also considered choosing Cragun as his general counsel, the only position on his staff that has not been filled.

Tani Downing, who held that role for former Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., was named director of risk management for the state in August.
