Enter pie-themed poetry in contest
Does your pie inspire poetry?
This Thanksgiving, the Deseret News Food section is sponsoring a Pie-Ku Contest. The inspiration came from the Tampa Tribune's annual fruitcake haiku contest, which has turned up such gems as these:
"Chop, dredge, cream, beat, sift,
Fold, stir, blend, grease, line, pour, cool;
Five pounds of fruitcake."
And:
"We mailed the fruitcake —
or so we thought — to Iraq.
Where's the salmon loaf?"
Can Deseret News readers can come up with some clever pie-themed haikus? A haiku is a nonrhymed verse that conveys an image or feeling in just three lines.
Usually the first line is five syllables, the second line seven syllables, and the third line is five syllables.
Here's are examples to spark your creativity:
"Oven yields up scents,
Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg
Thanksgiving is here!"
Or:
"Jane is like her pies
Rich, sweet, tender and nutty
A bit flaky too."
Send your Pie-Ku recipes to vphillips@desnews.com, or Valerie Phillips, food editor, Deseret News, 30 E. 100 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84111.
Include your name and mailing address (those who don't will automatically be disqualified). If you e-mail your Pie-ku in an attachment, your name and address must be included within the attachment.
The deadline is Nov. 16. We'll pick the top 10 entries to receive cookbooks, and publish as many entries as possible in our Nov. 25 Food section.
