MOAB — An airplane landed bottom side up after a problem with takeoff Sunday near the Green River.

The plane tried to take off on a 2,000-foot dirt runway at the Mineral Bottom landing strip, about 25 miles west of Moab, the Grand County Sheriff's Office reported. The plane wasn't lifting fast enough, so the pilot tried to stop the plane but ended up flipping it to land upside down about 9:30 a.m.

A passenger, John Purcell, 50, from California, was hit in the head, aggravating an old neck injury, deputies reported. The pilot was not injured. They were both flown out by another private plane to the Canyonlands Air Field, where an ambulance and a deputy met them, according to the sheriff's office.
