New buildings needed

I applaud Granite School District student Hyrum Stanford (Readers' Forum, Oct. 29) for his desire to see historical buildings preserved. I wish earlier generations would have shared that enthusiasm for preserving some of our heritage. However, I have to support the district's board and administration in electing to construct new facilities in the place of the older ones. Economically and educationally it makes more sense.

Young Mr. Stanford has erred in his observation that Olympus High "is the oldest operating high school in the district." Olympus was built in 1953. Cyprus High opened in 1918 with additions constructed in 1924 and 1928. Cyprus is still there, functioning as a fine high school.
