Pay for 'hospitality'?
Nia Sherar (Readers' Forum, Oct. 30) wonders why Americans aren't as "hospitable and humane" as the Italians. She fails to identify who, exactly, is paying the difference in costs for her friend's medical care. Is it the Italian hospital who must pass on the costs to other patients? Is it the Italian government in the form of higher taxes from Italian citizens?
What Ms. Sherar is suggesting is that Americans should be willing to pay for everyone's health care. That's impossible without someone footing the bill. Being hospitable requires payment by someone. Is she willing to pay for this "hospitality"? I'm not.
