LONDON (AP) — More than 300 works from Scottish painter Peter Howson's private collection are being sold at auction to help the artist beat his financial problems.

McTear's Auctioneers in the Scottish city of Glasgow said Howson was selling more than 200 drawings as well as watercolors and oils on Tuesday. The artist was quoted as telling the BBC that his poor business sense had led to him being "ripped off" over the years and that he needed more money.

Howson first came to prominence in the 1980s as one of the so-called New Glasgow Boys, a group of artists whose painting captured the rough-and-tumble of the working class city. He's since become a favorite of celebrities including David Bowie, Sylvester Stallone and Madonna — who he's repeatedly painted in the nude.
