Election 2009: Four seeking seats in Clearfield
CLEARFIELD — Mayor Don Wood is expected to coast to an easy victory Tuesday because he's running unopposed for his first full term in office.
But the election is anything but secure for the four candidates seeking two seats on the Clearfield City Council.
Glen Mills, 58, is a real estate investor who wants to focus on transportation, new business development and crime prevention. Mills also wants to increase the ratio of property owners to renters. He promises to use his council stipend to fund volunteer programs to fight crime, increase community involvement, prepare for emergencies or provide bill-payment incentives.
Incumbent Kathryn Murray, 65, is a homemaker completing her first term on the City Council. Murray says she has not voted to raise taxes in Clearfield and has read all documents and contracts before voting. She wants to maintain the city's balanced budget.
Incumbent Vern Phipps, 51, is a business analyst who is completing his first term on the City Council. Phipps said he wants to pursue viable economic development, make sure the city's infrastructure is maintained and prepare for possible emergencies.
Bruce Young, 32, is a state program auditor who has financial experience in the private and public sectors. Young promises to work for an efficiently run city, to protect public safety and to help make Clearfield's government open and accountable.
