CLINTON — Clinton's mayoral and City Council candidates want to make sure that future growth happens in a controlled way.

Two candidates are on the ballot for mayor.

Mitch Adams, 50, is a project manager at Hill Air Force Base, and is running for his third term as mayor. Adams says he understands balanced budgets and advocates for larger residential lots and commercial landscaping. He's committed to holding developers to standards without granting incentives, he said.

Carl Rumsey, 57, is retired from the fire service and wants to make sure public-safety needs are met. Rumsey said he sees growth as the most important issue facing Clinton and wants to bring to the city commercial businesses with long-term viability.

Four candidates are running for two seats on the City Council.

Blair Bateman, 51, is a Clinton dentist for 22 years who has been on the Board of Adjustment for 12 years. Bateman said he sees rapid growth and difficult economic times as two of Clinton's challenges. He would like to create a better community atmosphere with city-sponsored activities and volunteering in cultural, holiday, senior, youth or sports programs.

Joanne Hansen is a 35-year Clinton resident and works as a school counselor. Hansen has previously served 12 years on the City Council and serves on the city's Board of Adjustment. The biggest issues facing the city are roads, residential growth and commercial expansion, she says, adding that the city's growth can be controlled by updating the general plan.

Incumbent Barbara Patterson, 59, owns Magic Fingers Style Salon and is completing her first term on the City Council. Patterson said she wants to keep taxes low, balance commercial and residential growth, and work with the state and federal government on road and transportation issues.

Michael Petersen, 50, is an environmental scientist who has experience working with government and environmental regulations, long-term planning and construction projects. Petersen said he wants to make sure Clinton has sufficient water, sewer, roads and maintenance, and that the city lives within its budget. He wants Clinton to be a walkable city where residents feel they have ownership in the community.
