Hat trick gives Panthers boost over Stars
DALLAS — Steven Reinprecht had a natural hat trick in a 5:11 span of the first period, and Rostislav Olesz scored in the second round of a shootout to give the Florida Panthers a 6-5 victory over the Dallas Stars on Friday night.
Dallas rallied to send the game to overtime and the shootout, where Olesz was the only successful shooter when his attempt caromed off the goal post and behind Alex Auld. A video review confirmed that the puck crossed the goal line.
Florida goalie Scott Clemmensen denied Brad Richards in the third round to secure the victory for the Panthers, 0-3-1 in their previous four games.
PENGUINS 4, BLUE JACKETS 3, SO: At Columbus, Ohio, Pittsburgh scored twice in the final 3 minutes of regulation to tie it and Sidney Crosby had the only goal in the shootout to lead the Penguins to a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Brent Johnson stopped 29 shots before the shootout, then stymied Antoine Vermette, Rick Nash and Kristian Huselius in the tiebreaker. The Penguins improved to 6-0-0 on the road, the franchise's best start ever away from home, and 11-2-0 overall. Ruslan Fedotenko and Alex Goligoski scored late goals in a 39-second span to tie it.
ISLANDERS 4, CAPITALS 3, OT: At Washington, Mark Streit scored 53 seconds into overtime to give New York its second straight victory and third of the season. Frans Nielsen scored twice, Kyle Okposo added a goal, and Dwayne Roloson made 37 saves to help the Islanders end the Capitals' winning streak at six.
BLACKHAWKS 3, CANADIENS 2: At Chicago, Patrick Sharp scored with 4:10 left, and Kris Vertseeg and Cam Barker each had a goal and an assist for Chicago. Cristobal Huet stopped 20 shots in his fourth straight start and beat the Canadiens, one of his former teams, for first time in three games.
SABRES 3, MAPLE LEAFS 2, OT: At Buffalo, N.Y., Tim Connolly scored a power-play goal 1:04 into overtime, and Ryan Miller made 33 saves for Buffalo. Miller improved to 8-0-1, and the Sabres (8-1-1) won their fourth straight game to match their second-best start after 10 games since entering the NHL in 1970.
WILD 3, RANGERS 2: At St. Paul, Minn., Petr Sykora had a goal and an assist, and Eric Belanger and Antti Miettinen also scored in Minnesota's first regulation win of the season.
