Midvale hopeful faces 3-term mayor
MIDVALE — Three-term Mayor JoAnn B. Seghini has already had two opponents drop out of the race, but the lifelong educator still has to keep challenger Lynn Fuelling from capturing her seat in Tuesday's municipal election.
In contrast, the positions of City Council members Wayne Sharp and Colleen Costello are safe; neither is facing a challenger in this year's race.
Fuelling, 69, a retired contractor and construction-industry manager, said he got into the Midvale mayoral race to lower the city's crime rate. He is against the city's investment in UTOPIA, the Utah Telecommunications Open-Infrastructure Agency.
A Utah Taxpayers Association member, Fuelling also wants a change in the city's approach to code enforcement and increased focus on neighborhood cooperation with law enforcement.
Seghini, who promises this will be her last term if she's re-elected, said she wants to continue with economic-development efforts. She points to success at Bingham Junction, a former Superfund site, as evidence of her abilities.
The 72-year-old mayor is focused on providing housing opportunities for everyone from aging empty-nesters to newly marrieds and families with young children.
"I just think that it's very important that we maintain the direction that we're going without an interruption and change in leadership," Seghini said. "Four years from now, someone else can take over the reins."
