UVU campus briefs
MEN'S BASKETBALL: The Utah Valley University men's basketball team was selected Thursday by the coaches to finish second in the inaugural Great West Conference poll.
The Wolverines, who finished 17-11 last year, garnered two first-place votes and received a total of 38 points. South Dakota was picked to win the league with three first-place votes and 41 points.
"With a lot of unfamiliarity with each other in our new conference, it's a very nice compliment to receive such a lofty preseason ranking," UVU men's basketball coach Dick Hunsaker said. "We lost our backcourt in our outstanding scorer in Ryan Toolson and our team's defensive MYP in Josh Olsen, so the vote speaks very well of others' respect for our program."
UVU senior guard Jordan Swarbrick was named to the preseason all-conference second team.
Chicago State was selected third in the poll and North Dakota was fourth, followed by Houston Baptist, NJIT and Texas-Pan American.
The Wolverines host Trinity Western in an exhibition game on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at the McKay Center. They open up the regular season on Friday, Nov. 13, when they host North Dakota State at 7 p.m., also at the McKay Center.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Katey Turner scored a pair of goals as Utah Valley and senior goalkeeper Tasha Bell blanked South Dakota, 5-0, in the regular season finale on Thursday at Clyde Field.
It was Senior Day in Orem and Bell, Athena Maher, Brooke Salcido, Adrienne Schneider and Kelly Vide were all honored prior to the game. Bell's shutout is her second of the season and the fourth this year for the Wolverines (6-10-1), who finished an unbeaten 5-0-1 in Great West Conference play.
Schneider was credited with the game-winning goal after her 30th-minute goal on a Brianne Larsen assist accounted for the only scoring in the first half.
Turner scored the first of her two goals on a Nicole Archibald assist in the 67th minute, opening the floodgates for the Wolverines. Turner came back with her second goal seven minutes later after rebounded her own header.
Madeline McQuarrie scored her first career goal in the 79th minute on assists from Schneider and Larsen. Jaime Lyons then capped the scoring in the 85th minute when she and Vide played hot potato before Lyons punched it in right in front of the goal. Lyons leads Utah Valley with six goals and 12 points and has scored five of her goals in conference play.
