A letter published in this forum on Wednesday accused Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, of voting in favor of a federal hate-crimes bill that was signed into law this week ("Hatch disappoints," Readers' Forum, Oct. 28). According to officials from the senator's office, he was being honored at BYU that day and was excused from the Senate. They refer to the Congressional Record of that day, which says that, had Hatch been present, he "would have voted 'nay.' "
