SUU campus briefs
WOMEN'S GOLF: The Thunderbirds make their second trip of the fall season to central California this weekend when they compete at Cal Poly's Lampkin Grip Invitational. The tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,022-yard Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
Scheduled to compete for SUU's team in the tournament are junior Morgan Kerber, sophomores Sadie Palmer, Kacy Buckner and Mikayla Williamson, and freshman Jamie Coking, with freshman Brittany Edwards playing as an individual.
The 16-team field includes British Columbia, Cal State-Bakersfield, Cal State-Fullerton, Cal State-Northridge, Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Portland, Sacramento State, UC Riverside, Utah Valley, Weber State, Xavier, Southern Utah and host Cal Poly.
"We've been playing better this fall than we have in either of our previous two seasons," SUU coach Richard Church said of his team. "This weekend's tournament has the toughest field we've competed against, though, so it will be interesting to see how we play. I think we have the ability to compete very well this weekend at a challenging golf course against a challenging field."
In the T-Birds' previous tournament, Palmer shot one-under par 143 to edge Utah Valley's Abbie Archibald and Monica Fox for the individual title and lead SUU to a first-place finish at the Utah Collegiate Shootout. Buckner and Williamson finished second among the Thunderbirds' golfers and tied for seventh overall at 157, while Kerber was 13th at 163 and Coking finished 16th at 171. Edwards finished 17th at 173 playing as an independent. SUU finished at 620 to finish ahead of Utah Valley at 623 and Weber State at 630 in the three-team tourney.
