When Lone Peak and West Jordan take the field in a 5A first-round playoff matchup on Friday, it looks to be a battle between two teams peaking at the right time.

The Knights have won four straight games and earned a share of the prestigious Region 4 championship. With a veteran quarterback in Tannon Pedersen and a quick and aggressive defense, the sky seems to be the limit for Lone Peak in the state playoffs.

"Athletically, they're as good as I've ever seen," said West Jordan coach Mike Morgan. "They've got a lot of team speed and they get to the ball well."

The Jaguars finished their season on a bit of a hot streak as well, scoring an average of 58.5 points in their last two games. West Jordan, which defeated Kearns in its final regular season game to clinch a berth in the state playoffs, is led by junior quarterback Adam Boelter. He has lit up most of the Jaguars' opponents this season in throwing 26 touchdown passes and averaging more than 300 passing yards per game.

"They love to throw the ball," said Lone Peak coach Tony McGeary. "They have a good quarterback and good receivers. They're coming in (with a) 7-3 record), so they're doing something right. We're certainly not going to take them lightly."

As a region co-champion, Lone Peak is obviously favored in this game. The Knights have suffered just two losses this season, and they came against powerhouses Alta and Bountiful. The Knights have a strong resume, having beaten Pleasant Grove, Mountain Crest, Riverton, Jordan and Brighton. McGeary said Pedersen has had quality wideouts to thrown to in Jacob Hannemann and Ryan Savage. The defense has been led by players such as McKay Murphy, Kyson Flake, Levi Gifford and Kolton Palmer and a secondary that's up to the task of slowing any passing team in the state.

Friday's game will feature a great matchup of quarterbacks. Pedersen is a returning starter and directs a balanced offense.
