WOMEN' S VOLLEYBALL: Outside hitter Kayli Broadbent recorded 23 kills and outside hitter Camie Manwill added 14 more but it wasn't enough in the Wolverines' 22-25, 28-30, 25-15, 23-25 non-conference loss to BYU on Tuesday night.

The Wolverines (16-8) are now 0-6 all-time against BYU. UVU went 5-2 against in-state schools this season with wins over Weber State, Utah State, then-No. 17 Utah and two wins over Southern Utah.

"I think it was fairly even. If you look at the score and everything that went on it came down to the end with one serve, one swing or one block that really made the difference," UVU volleyball coach Sam Atoa said. "We had chances to take advantage of certain things and we didn't do it, and they had chances at certain times and they did it."

Utah Valley led by as many as four points in the first set at 16-12 after a BYU error, a kill by Broadbent and two kills by Manwill. BYU rallied to take the lead at 20-19 before UVU tied the match at 20-20 and 21-21.

The Cougars (11-10) scored three straight points and four of the next five to take the opening set 25-22.

Manwill paced the Wolverines with seven kills in the first set, while Broadbent finished with five. UVU hit at .190, while BYU hit at .440.

Broadbent opened the second set with a kill and then served the next five points to give the Wolverines a 6-0 lead, a lead they held until BYU tied the set at 17-17.

The Cougars took their first lead of the set at 19-18 and then went up 20-18 on back-to-back aces.

UVU fought off two BYU set points at 24-23 and 25-24. UVU then had two set-point opportunities but couldn't finish off the set. It appeared the Wolverines had won the match, 28-26, but well after the play was over, the official called an illegal back-row attack to prolong the set.

For the third time in the set, UVU held off another BYU set point to tie the set at 28-28, but the Cougars scored two consecutive points to win the set.

Broadbent had five kills in the set, Manwill had four and Chelsea Fa'alogo had three. Jones added five digs. UVU hit at .208 in the set and BYU hit at 173.

The Wolverines blew the third set open early. Leading 10-8, the Wolverines scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a commanding 20-9 lead. In the run, Fa'alogo had three kills and Broadbent had two of her six kills in the set.

Jones and Kathleen Stevens served four points each in the run. Manwill closed out the set with her lone kill of the set.

UVU hit at .222 for the set and BYU hit at -.148.
