Utah Jazz: Korver anticipated out until December

DENVER — The Jazz haven't issued a timetable for how long they expect Kyle Korver will need to recover from arthroscopic knee surgery.

But it's believed he anticipates being out about six weeks, and if that's the case, the backup shooting guard would miss about 21 games — or roughly a quarter of the season.

"He's definitely frustrated … about the situation," said point guard Deron Williams, who's kept in touch with Korver since he left last week for New York and a second opinion on his left knee.

The surgery is needed to address a patellar-tendon related bone spur in the knee, an injury that kept him from playing in all but one of Utah's eight preseason games.

It initially had been planned for Tuesday in New York, but it was rescheduled to today. The Jazz weren't certain why, a team spokesman said.

The six-week mark would have Korver returning Dec. 10 vs. Orlando.

Swingman C.J. Miles (thumb surgery) also is expected out until sometime in December at the earliest.

THINK GREEN: The Jazz will wear an alternate green jersey more than 10 times this season, including a Dec. 4 game against Indiana and March 17 — St. Patrick's Day — against Minnesota.

The throwback jersey, featuring a musical-note logo, and matching green shorts beckon back to road uniforms from their 1979-80 season.

NO SMITH: Denver guard J.R. Smith is out for the Jazz's 2009-10 regular-season opener tonight against the Nuggets, suspended seven games after serving jail time for his reckless driving at the wheel of a 2007 car crash that killed his best friend.

"He's certainly a huge factor for them, and I thought he had a great year last year," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "He has the ability to shoot the ball and really give them a lot of big play. He's become a much better defensive player (too)."

THEY SAID IT: Some comments from ESPN.com prognosticators heading into the season:

Jon Barry: "Carlos Boozer wants a contract, so expect him to play very well."

J.A. Adande: "I have them in the playoffs only because it's hard to picture a Jerry Sloan-coached team not in the playoffs. But they don't play Sloan-style D and probably will move Boozer."
