Quidditch on the ground?

Members of the Blacksburg (Va.) University Ward made that happen Oct. 17 on the drill field of Virginia Tech's campus.

Sarah Turner, ward activities chairwoman, said she had seen a video on the Internet showing how to play Quidditch without flying.

"I'm a bookworm and having already embraced my inner nerd, I thought it would make an entertaining activity …", she said in an e-mail. "This was the first time I've ever played Quidditch so I had to look up rules both online (to make allowances for not being able to fly) and in 'Harry Potter' books to make sure we had something resembling the game from the books."

Making the hoops for the game was the most difficult part of preparing, she said. "I got 1x3x8 boards and cut them to various lengths (6 feet being the tallest) for the hoops. I attached smaller boards to the tops making a T shape and then drilled holes in six obstacle course rings and screwed them onto the tops of the boards. We then hammered the hoops into the ground."
