Utah — When Mormons leave Utah to pursue higher education they change
not only themselves but also the local LDS community and the broader
culture. On Nov. 5-6, the Utah Valley University Religious Studies
Program presents a conference titled \"Outmigration and the Mormon Quest
for Education.\"
Presenters will explore such topics as \"J. Reuben Clark: Utah's
Diplomatic Outmigrant,\" \"Harvey Fletcher: An Early Outmigrant From
Utah\" and \"The Perpetual Education Fund: Building Zion Away from the
Center.\" Speakers include Elder John K. Carmack, Jan Shipps, James
Holtkamp, Armand L. Mauss, D. Michael Quinn, Robert C. Fletcher, Brian
Cannon, Mark W. Cannon, David P. Gardner, Boyd J. Petersen, Brian D.
Birch, G. Wesley Johnson, Marian A. Johnson, and Ned and Claralyn Hill.
Grethe and Chase Peterson will present the keynote address on \"From
West to East and Back and Back.\"
The 10th annual Mormon Studies Conference, \"Outmigration and the
Mormon Quest for Education,\" is free and open to the public on Nov. 5-6
at the Library Lecture Hall at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
Thursday's sessions are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Friday's sessions
are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A special Thursday evening session will be
held at 8 p.m. at BYU in the Library Auditorium.
