Fugitive arrested following chase
A wanted federal fugitive led police on a chase early Tuesday but was captured after the front tires of his vehicle were shredded and fell off.
Last week, Brock Case, 34, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail after investigators recovered tens of thousands of dollars worth of stolen cars, motorcycles and bicycles at a house near 700 East and 3200 South. Case, a member of the Silent Aryan Warriors, was on federal probation.
However, Case was able to bail out of jail two days later before a federal hold could be obtained. After he was released, a warrant was issued for his arrest for violating his federal probation.
Just after 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, a deputy spotted Case near 2700 South and 900 East and called for backup to make a traffic stop, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Don Hutson.
Several deputies tried to make a stop, but Case took off. Hutson said the decision was made to pursue the suspect.
"This person was a huge flight risk and a danger to the community," he said. "We have to look at whether the risks outweigh the benefits. Had it gone on, we may have called the chase off."
At 4800 South and 500 West, deputies were able to lay tire spikes and shred the front two tires of Case's truck. He continued driving, however, and as he tried to make a turn onto Redwood Road, the tires came off the rims, Hutson said.
Case got out of his car and ran, but he was quickly tracked down by two pursuing deputies, who took him into custody. Inside the truck, investigators found a "bunch of property," some of it Case's, some of it believed to be stolen, Hutson said. In addition, deputies found burglary tools, ammunition, and baggies typically used for drugs, but no narcotics.
After the chase was over, a tip for an anonymous citizen lead detectives to a .45-caliber revolver left abandoned in a yard. The gun and the ammunition found in the truck are compatible and investigators believe Case tossed the gun out the window early in the chase near 1200 East and 2700 South.
Hutson said the federal warrant will ensure that Chase does not bail out of jail this time. In addition, he will face new state charges for his actions Tuesday morning, Hutson said.
